56: What’s your whiskey? (Old Forester 1920 Prohibition)
Thursday Aug 24, 2023
Thursday Aug 24, 2023
Welcome to Blue Collar Whiskey Drinkers. This episode is part of our "Whats your whiskey?" series. On "What's your whiskey?" we will be reviewing the whiskey that our guest recommends. On this episode our guest Kyle owner of Prohibition Brewing Company recommended Old Forester 1920 Prohibition.
"The Volstead Act of 1920 which initiated Prohibition in the USA granted permits to six distillers in Kentucky to continue to bottle bourbon for medicinal purposes. Through one of these permits, Old Forester continued to be produced as medicinal whiskey on Louisville’s famed Whiskey Row. It is the only bourbon continuously sold by the same company that has been available for sale before, during and after Prohibition.
During this time, all whiskies had to be bottled at 100 Proof. With a barrel entry proof of 100, the “angel’s share” would have created a 115 proof whiskey after maturation. To pay homage to this era, Old Forester presents 1920 Prohibition Style Bourbon at 115 proof to represent the rich flavor profile this bourbon had nearly 100 years ago." (Old Forester)

Welcome to Blue Collar Whiskey Drinkers. On this episode we review Pikesville Rye.
"First produced in Maryland in the 1890s, Pikesville Rye, along with the rest of the once-booming Maryland Rye industry, was shuttered by Prohibition. The brand reemerged after Prohibition and became the last standing Maryland Rye, as the rest of the industry's production had ceased. Now produced in Kentucky from extra-aged barrels stored in prime warehouse locations, Heaven Hill Distillery keeps this historic Maryland mark alive." Heaven Hill Distillery

"Born 40 years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, George A. Dickel was an established Nashville merchant when he entered the whisky business. Dickel grew his reputation for selling the smoothest, most mellow spirits in the region.
Thus, Geo. A. Dickel & Co. was born and when the Cascade Hollow Distillery opened in 1878 in neighboring Coffee County, George Dickel bought a large share." George Dickel

Welcome to Blue Collar Whiskey Drinkers. On this episode we review Ammunition Straight Bourbon Whiskey.
"A smooth finish 4 years in the making.
This is a blend of 2, 3 and 4 year old Bourbon, finished no less than 3 months in wine barrels which previously held several vintages of Ammunition Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignon. This unique process imparts a sweetness and tannin unlike that of any other bourbon. You can smell it on the nose and see it with your eyes. This is a rye made for sipping and crafted for the bold and the brave, unafraid to rise to the occasion. Ammunition Straight Bourbon Whiskey is special. Dark amber in color, you can expect notes of caramel, butterscotch with a finish of vanilla and a hint of richness courtesy of the Cabernet Sauvignon French Oak casks. Special mash bill of 60% Corn, 25% Wheat, 10% Rye, 5% Malted Barley." Ammunition Straight Bourbon Whiskey.
